There are frequent communications with members who have e-mail
addresses. For those who do not, we try to communicate at least annually by
mail, funds permitting. To become a
member, simply contact either of the above, providing your address, college,
and year of matriculation.
Objectives of the Society
The Oxford University Society (OUS) is the official alumni
organization of the University of Oxford, whose object
is to advance the purposes and interests of the University of Oxford.
The objectives of our branch are to represent the Oxford University
Society worldwide in Toronto and the
surrounding area and, in particular:
- To act as a forum for Oxford alumni in the GTA
area.
- To raise the profile of Oxford University in the GTA.
- To organize events of interest
to Oxford alumni.
- To provide networking
opportunities and career advice for recent graduates.
- To provide a link to the OUS in
Oxford and worldwide.
- To have fun and, occasionally,
indulge in sagacious frivolity.
What we do
- Hold lunches on the first
Friday of each month (except July and August) in downtown Toronto to socialize and to
discuss whatever. Occasionally there is a speaker. Costs are held to $25
including tax and gratuity. Drinks, except coffee or tea, are extra.
- Hold an annual cricket match
against Cambridge alumni. This event
has been held for over twenty years and is for the Michener Trophy. We are
actively seeking to arrange other sporting events.
- Hold social events of various
kinds, sometimes jointly with other alumni associations. For example, we have an annual
pub night in December jointly with LSE, Cambridge, and others.
- Whatever our members wish, and
are willing to help organize.
What you can contribute
- Provide ideas for events or,
better still, offer to take the lead in organizing one.
- “Membership” is free. Events
are self-financing, sometimes with contributions from individuals or
organizations.
- We hold monthly organizational
meetings of those willing to help and others who simply wish to contribute
their ideas. They are held downtown on a midweek evening, usually from
1730 to around 1900. Anyone is welcome to
attend. Just contact either Mr Chester or Mr Selley
for details.
- Talk to your Oxford friends, find out
whether they are on our e-mail and mailing lists and, if not, ask them to contact the
membership secretary.

Events elsewhere
Information about the following two events may be found on the OUS
web site at www.ox.ac.uk/alumni.
- Every
two years, there is a “North American Reunion” for Oxford
alumni. It is held in New
York and attracts a huge
number of Oxford people. College representatives
attend and on the Saturday night colleges arrange events for their alumni in
varying degrees of splendour and formality, but always involving good food and
companionship.
